SOUNDINGS

From Pastor Mary

March always brings wind and change.  Clouds whirl, hats and scarves whirl, waves whirl, and then there's kites - they SOAR!  Each March, I remember the heavy brown paper kite my father and I made when I was young.  Year after year it was rolled up and stored in the open rafters of the basement, above Dad's workbench, just kind of hibernating until it woke up one day when the windy days of March blew into suburban Detroit.  I'd climb up on the workbench and unwrap my kite and I'd run off down the road to an open field where up, up and away would go my kite until, as a child, it seemed I could barely see it anymore but could still feel it tugging and calling, "Higher, higher!" on the string!  Just closing my eyes now, I can feel it pulling all over again.

Then there was the time when my daughter Melinda and I went to our church's "Kite Fly" in Nashville when I was interning at a church there during my middle year at Vanderbilt Divinity School.  There were lots of youth and adults and kites all running around together when, all of a sudden, my daughter's kite took off!  The string ran right out of her hand, and even though she is a very speedy runner, she just couldn't catch it.  I couldn't help at all for I was laughing too hard!  Yes, that kite was one of those chosen to fulfill its destiny of flying away and may even now be found in Mongolia!

"Ruah" is a Hebrew work that means wind and spirit.  I like to think that on windy days when the weather is billowing and blabbing, that God is moving around with joy and gusto!  Yes, there comes that moment in March when "we know what we know" and it is that tired winter is slowly lying down and spring is yawning, stretching, and then "springing" out of bet! How about us?  How do we leave weary winter behind and move robustly into sweet spring?  Lent gives us space and place to think about just that.  It is a time for reflection, looking backward and playing forward.  We ask, "How am I doing with the one corporation I can do something about, "I, Inc." ?  Am I happy, healthy and in control?  What can I do to be happier, healthier, and more in control?  Where do I begin with tiny steps that I know can make a large difference in my life?  (linger for a while over your answers...)

Every day is a new beginning, especially, if we think of it as the last day of our life, not the first.  If we don't have a vision, a goal and/or a plan, where are we going?  Someone once told me, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up someplace else"  Let us each decide our life.

During lent, when we pause to consider Jesus' life of love and surrender, let us each unroll our own life, like we would a kite, and ponder, "Where am I going -- in my family, in my church, in my work, in my world?  What do I have to let go of in order to be about what's most important to me?  What can I do to make each day a little better, a little kinder, a little less about me and more about others?  How can I live more economically and less wastefully?  What does Christ's incredible love really mean to me?

Joy in the journey we share...and see you in church,
Pastor Mary

Musical Notes

music notes
from Music Minister: Susan Byrn Kapec

There is quite a bit happening at LCC lately, have you noticed?  And this is very exciting for me!  I have prayed and played and worshipped with you for less than a month, yet I already feel very much at home.  Your smiles, handshakes and hellos have warmed my heart.  And I don't need to tell you how important those qualities are in a congregation that wants to grow and share your faith with others not yet members.

I want to share with you some of the music news at LCC.  I've been talking with Tom Buckley lately and he really wants to come back and work with me and sing in the near future.  We are trying to work out a schedule.  I have hired a trumpet player, Don Jocis, who will grace us with his gifts for Easter.  I've worked with Dan many times in the past and he is quite excited about coming to LCC.   I also have a local friend who plays the flute and she will be playing at worship sometime in March.

The choir has begun to grow and I look forward to welcoming new members.  Rehearsals are on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am.  We've already begun to look ahead and are ready to begin our rehersals for Easter.  Even if you can't join us from September through June, why not consider a short-term membership?  We welcome anyone that would like to join the choir for Palm Sunday through Easter.  Just show up on Sundays at 9:00 am in the Sanctuary, or feel free to email me:  sbryn@tkdg.com

I will begin posting news and events on a bulletin board.  Music chair, Karen Hope, Pastor Mary and I are looking for the right spot.  It will be updated frequently showing local events as well as our church family events.

I would also like you to consier giving a monetary gift to LCC to cover some of the extraordinary expenses that will incur during the year.  Outside musicians aren't free and our current budget doesn't allow for much creativity yet.  So, why not consider putting a little extra in the offering plate in memory of someone special, or in celebration of you baptismal anniversary, wedding anniversary, birthday, celebration of a new baby or new car, or the fact that you still have a job?  Every little bit helps.     Thank you!

One Great Hour of Sharing

SUNDAY MORNING BOOK STUDY

Each year our church joins with others across America to help those in greatest need.  "One great hour of sharing" supports international programs of  health, education, agricultural development, relief, and refugee assistance.

Working with international partners, the United Church of Christ provides sources of clean water and food, education and health care, micro-credit loans, emergency relief, advocacy and resettlement for refugees.  In addition, work is done to help people prepare for disasters before they arise, and to rebuild following the effects of devastating disasters.

An offering envelope is available for you to use.  You may place the envelope in the collection plate any Sunday in March or you can mail it to the church.  We will be dedicating our OGHS offering during worship on Sunday, March 23.  Thank you, bless you, for your kindness to others in Christ's name.

Currently there are twelve adults

Secretarial Assistance

As our church moves into the future, leadership has begun to ponder:  What kind of office assistance do we need for our pastor and for our church in general?  A job description is being prepared, but before we go further, we want your ideas.
To help get your thinking started, here are some questions:

  • What have we done well in the office?
  • What haven't we done so well in the office?
  • What could we have done better and how?
  • Is there anything we didn't ask, but you feel is important?

Get your good ideas to Fred Biebel, George Baird, Eunice Lisk, Bob Sammis or Pastor Mary as soon as possible.  If you know someone you think would be an asset, resumes may be sent to the church:

Lordship Community Church
179 Prospect Drive
Stratford, CT 06615
or emailed to Pastor Mary at:
faithhopeandloveabide@gmail.com

Most importantly, please begin to pray for the person we're sure God is calling to this part-time yet so vital position of service to God and to all of us here at
Lordship Community Church.

       BIBLE BRAIN TEASER:

I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts and for other it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. One little lady says she brews a cup of tea, so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now for there are really sixteen names of books of the Bible in this story.
