The Lordship
Historical Trolley Tour

(Interview with Fred Biebel)

Lordship is the place to be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009 as the community will be hosting the 1st Lordship Historical Trolley Tour.  The tour will feature several stops and spotlight many local organizations along the way.

Fred Biebel, a Lordship resident and member of Lordship Community Church, has helped organize the event and provides some historical background on the use of trolleys in Lordship.  According to Mr. Biebel, back in the early 1900’s, trolley cars were the main form of transportation into Lordship.  In fact, Mr. Biebel’s father was a trolley conductor.  Two of the historical features to be pointed out along the way are: the location of where the original trolley tracks came through  near Washington Parkway; and the original Farmhouse at Fourth Avenue.

There will be two trolleys running simultaneously during the day.  Tickets to ride the trolleys all day are $10 for an individual and $20 for a family.  Tickets are on sale now, through the day of the event, and can be purchased on the event day at the three churches located in Lordship: Lordship Community Church, United Church of Christ, 179 Prospect Drive; Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 651 Stratford Road; and St. Joseph’s of Stratford, National Catholic Church, 1300 Stratford Road.

There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, at 8:45 a.m., at the intersection of Ivy Street and Prospect Drive, to open the event and start the running of the trolleys.

The trolley stops will include: the three churches; the Civil Air Patrol; the Firehouse; the Seawall; Russian Beach; the former Gun Club; and the Lighthouse.  Organizations represented along the route are: the Lordship Father’s Club; Protect Your Environment (PYE); and the Lordship Improvement Association.

The day promises to be full of fun, food, and music.  Lordship Community Church will feature a quilt display, a food showcase with a Country Store theme and children’s activities.  There will be a carnival at St. Joseph’s of Stratford.  Our Lady of Peace is sponsoring a marketplace.  And, there will be an antique car show located at the Seawall.

Save the date to ride the trolleys and experience what the Lordship community has to offer.  Come and bring your family and friends and celebrate the history of Lordship!

Soundings
by Rev. Mary Snell Willis

buttercupWhat is so rare as a day in June?  Than if ever come perfect days,
When heaven tries the earth if it be in tune, and over it softly her warm ear lays.

Whether we look, or whether we listen, we hear life murmur, or see it glisten;

Every clod feels a stir of might, an instinct within it that reaches and towers,

And, grasping blindly above it for light, climbs to a soul in grass and flowers,

The flush of life may well be seen, thrilling back over hills and valleys;

The cowslip startles in meadows green, the buttercup catches the sun in its chalice,

And there’s never a leaf or a blade too mean to be some happy creature’s palace.”

From “The Vision of Sir Launfal” by James Russell Lowell (1819-1891)

Don’t you just love the days of June?  I can’t squeeze enough June into my month!

Right now, the middle of May, I am planting, planting, planting.  Because the new

parsonage basically had foundation plantings across the front and a tree in each

part of the front yard and that was it, Mike and I have enjoyed planting some bushes,

trees and vines.  Mike gave me a pink flowering dogwood and I gave him a weeping

white cherry, for Mother’s and Father’s Day respectively.  Also, I’ve planted a white

climbing rose and some clematis and perennials.  Now we’re putting in vegetables.

Mike is mad for tomatoes and eats at least one every day after they ripen—until he almost turns red!  As for me, I just love to plant.  When I am planting, I think of myself as playing outside with God!  I think so often of the scripture from John:  “I am the vine, you are the branches.  Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit….”  John 15:5

Every home we’ve been blessed to enjoy, and ultimately to leave, we’ve intentionally made so much more beautiful than when we found it.  I couldn’t begin to count the numbers of trees we’ve planted.  And we all know how much trees oxygenate the air, as well as, provide shade and cooling during the hot summer months.  My father taught me to love trees and I’m sure you love them, too, for every yard in Lordship has ornamental trees in color right now!

What do you love to do in June?  Are you a boater, sailor, fisher, golfer, traveler, reader or beach comber?  Whatever you do, CELEBRATE JUNE WITH GUSTO!  For “whether we look, or whether we listen, we hear life murmur, or see it glisten!”  Think of yourself as playing outside with God!  Enjoy!!!

Don’t forget to mark your calendar to CELEBRATE JUNE with us, starting Saturday, June 13 at the first-ever LORDSHIP HISTORICAL TROLLEY DAY!  To ride one of the two trolleys which will be touring Lordship that day, you will need to buy a ticket ($20 per family or $10 per person.)  Tickets are available from Fred Biebel or Eunice Lisk from our church.  Each of the three Lordship churches is selling tickets with all of the proceeds going to the church from which you buy your ticket.  You then get a wristband.  If you want to just enjoy what’s going on at our church, you won’t need a ticket or wristband.  In order to make our church’s part a HUGE success, there are various ways you can be part of the action.  See the Trolley article on the cover!

Jazz it up with us on Sunday, June 14, for it is our Annual Lordship Church Jazz Sunday!  You won’t want to miss the chance to CELEBRATE JAZZ AND GOD here!

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21, which is also the first day of summer!  We’ll have fun in worship as we CELEBRATE DADS or those who are/were like dads to us.

CELEBRATE “Fun Night Out” on Saturday, June 27, at the free outdoor concert by the Bridgeport Symphony at Fairfield U.  Let’s carpool and bring picnic food to share!

June 28 will be CELEBRATION SUNDAY!  We will confirm Brianne Cronk, Amanda

Green and Jordan Weiss.  We will also recognize our volunteers.  After worship, we

will have an All-Church Picnic outdoors.  The church will provide meat on the grill.  We ask others to provide soda or water, chips, condiments, beans and salads.  Dessert will be cake and ice cream in honor of our confirmands!

CELEBRATING LIFE IS WHAT JUNE IS ALL ABOUT!  I celebrate GOD and YOU!!!

Joy in the journey we share and see you in worship,

                                                      Rev. Mary

Prayer Shawl Possiblities

Rev. Mary presented two prayer shawl workshops at the CT United Church of Christ Annual Spring Meeting at Asylum Hill Church in Hartford in May.  She has been part of prayer shawl care groups in the last two churches she has served and is praying that we can get a group going here at our church.  It involves knitting or crocheting shawls/throws which are then given as gifts to those needing comfort or those celebrating events.  A prayer is given with each shawl or throw, which is blessed beforehand.  So many lives have been touched by prayer shawls or throws (for guys).  If you are interested in participating, or you would like to learn more, (or even learn how to knit or crochet), contact Rev. Mary or Barbara McMellon.  We hope to get this going right after summer ends and fall begins.

Lordship is looking for you ...  to share your gifts!

notes

As the warmer weather approaches and the choir season begins to wind down, we look forward to a summer of family fun, vacations and a time to try something new.

At Lordship we will continue to worship through the summer and look forward to seeing you and your family and friends. Consider bringing them all for worship before you begin your BBQs.

I am also hoping that many of you will step forward and share your talent with the congregation during worship in the summer. Do you play washboard? Play a kazoo or recorder? How about whistle? A dance would be nice, or a song. Also, looking for people to sing duets, trios or solos.

Come share your gifts. Come pray with us. Come and enjoy your church family this summer.

Rehearsals for summer gifts/talents will be on Sunday mornings, at 8:30 a.m., so no need to come out during the week.

HELLO!

sandra pic

My name is Sandra Iannotti.

I am thrilled to have been selected as the new Church Secretary.  I am a lifelong Stratford resident and have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.  I also work part time at a law firm.

My spare time is spent pursuing my passion:  animals.  I enjoy the company of my beagle.  I am a volunteer with Stratford Cat Project and FeralCare, both dedicated to helping homeless cats and kittens.  Both organizations do important work, whether it is finding animals loving homes, or spaying and neutering to help control the number of homeless animals.  My greatest joy is helping a scared animal learn to trust humans and witnessing the transformation.  I am a volunteer with SWIM Across the Sound and have helped with various events over the years.

Thank you for the warm welcome and the invitation to the May Clambake!

Trustees Plus

Trustees …have been working hard cleaning up the church grounds!

They have also been scraping, priming and painting our ramp.

Thank you, guys, bless you,

for jobs well done!

QUILTING AND CRAFTING

A group of women have been gathering at 7:00 p.m. every other Monday to do projects together which involve quilting and/or crafting. They meet in the Parlor and have lots of fun together! You do not have to know how to sew to take part. It is just a great time to "hang out" and maybe learn. Some of the "designer" projects which the women have made will be for sale at our "Old Fashioned Country Fair" here on June 13th when we celebrate Lordship's First Historical Trolley Day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (rain or shine)!

Lordship Community Church hosted a Clambake on Saturday, May 16th. The event garnered a wonderful turnout with over 100 diners in attendance. The food was fabulous. A big thank you goes to Don Wetmore and his exemplary crew for all of their hard work in presenting a delicious spread, highlighted by the lobster. Thanks to everyone who contributed by bringing hor d'oeuvres and desserts.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the “Crop Walk” this year.  Your donations were greatly appreciated!  Special recognition goes to our walkers who braved the rain that day.  Thank you for your commitment!

Memorial Day Service

Installation Dinner

The Lordship Community gathered on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th at the memorial monument in Lordship Center for a brief service to honor the memory of our deceased Veterans.

Reverend Mary gave the invocation,
in front of a wonderful assembly, at the event.

On Saturday, April 18th, Pastor Mary was installed as minister and teacher of Lordship Community Church at a lovely service.

Music was presented by "Kapela", Susan's contemporary praise group, and there were songs by our choir.

Members of the Search Committee including Fred Biebel, Bob Sammis, Debbie Cronk and Mary Scruggs, as well as, moderator Dave Healing also participated in the event.

Rev. Cynthia Robinson attended representing The Fairfield East Association of the CT UCC. And, the charge sermon was given by CT Conference Minister for Youth and Young Adults, Da Vita McAlister.

Delicious food was enjoyed by all and the tables were decorated with centerpieces created by Debbie Cronk.

It was a joyous occasion
